During the week, I was thinking about thinking š š¤ ?, and Convergent and divergent thinking processes caught my attention. So this is how they are different from each other - š
ā¢ Convergent thinking. Whenever, we want to solve a problem, we look for valuable inputs or facts to guide us to the correct answer. This type of thinking works well when the problem is straightforward and it requires a reasonable solution.
ā¢ Divergent thinking. When we face more complex problems, just focusing on facts or desirable inputs are not enough to get us to a specific answer. In divergent thinking, we explore many ideas which are capable to create unexpected connections that lead to interesting solutions.
So simply put - š
Convergent thinking is based on prior knowledge, while divergent thinking is based on imagination.
Linkage between āDivergent thinking and Playfulnessā
The research has found that divergent thinking is linked to playfulness and creativity. For example - children who play more tend to display curiosity, persistence, nonconformity, and a willingness to take risks. These are few important characteristics to find an innovative solutions.
There are many ways to enhance your ādivergent thinkingā by putting these practices -
Brainstorming - It helps you to generate as many ideas as possible. This also promote inter-disciplinary connect to see things in more holistic ways.
Free writing -It helps to clarify your thinking while producing new ideas. It will also assist you in developing focus on the question and writing without stopping for a specified time.
Art - Doing doodling, painting, creating graphs and illustrations encourage you to create abstract connections which allows you to think outside the box.
Role playing - Putting yourself in the shoes of a different character is a good way to practice divergent thinking.
