Hey Friends ,
During the week , I happened to recall my interaction with one of my senior colleague. The interesting thing with him was that his most of the communication were prefixed with - “ I am curious to know…. Or Tell me more on this as I’am curious…. And many more similar phrases. Now when I recall, it still makes me curious as to what a profound wisdom he had during these interactions and displayed a most essential skill of a leader.
Curiosity is not a luxury of philosophers. It should be a business for commoners and is definitely a leadership essential.
All the accidental discoveries or successes have curiosity in common - You remove the blinders of people, tap into their curiosity and see the value of the unexpected. But unfortunately most of us don’t have time to stumble upon inventing the slinky. We have too many pressing concerns, too many deadlines. I have heard people saying - ‘ Enough with the curiosity, Let’s get s**t done’.
In reality, curiosity actually helps get things done faster and we do not spend more time being curious at work ?.
I would suggest four reasons along with possible solutions for each one of them -
Not Enough Time : - From various businesses or organisations perspective, curiosity is inefficient. It opens up too many possibilities, which encourages going down rabbit holes instead of taking direct action.
Probable Solution - Set aside a specific time for curiosity. What if, once a month you and your team allocates half a day to get curious about a vexing problem that requires some unconventional thinking or inspiration.
The Fear of Looking and Sounding Stupid : Curiosity asks us to open up to the idea that we don’t have all the answers. This is intimidating for many, especially in a competitive world that champions know -it- all’s and experts.
Probable Solution - Socialize curiosity in meetings. Maybe appoint someone as the chief curiosity officer, who can be the curiosity catalyst for the rest of the group. Best to select a different person each time, so everyone get to exercise their curiosity muscle.
Lack of Awareness around the value of corporate Curiosity: While creativity and innovation get all kinds of attention in leadership development programs, most programs don’t acknowledge that curiosity is the elixir for these two qualities.
Probable Solution - Educate your team on the tangible benefits of curiosity including how curiosity created iconic brands like Nike and Netflix.
Sterile Office Environments - Let’s face it, conference room and cubicles don’t always bring out the best of our curious minds.
Probable Solution - Leave out your office behind once in a while. Get out into nature as a team. Give your mind and opportunity to see wider horizon and wander in multitude of issues to have a better sense of the problem and it's fix.
Take good care & enjoy reading this week's dose of ‘Mindful Productivity & Cerebral Happiness’.
